LIBERTY COMMODITIES CORPORATION
Liberty Commodities Corporation is part of the Liberty group of companies involved in a wide range of enterprises including flour milling, food processing and marketing, animal feed production, agribusiness, chemicals, food service and real estate.
It was organized in June 1965 as “Wheat Products, Inc.” This came about because of the enactment of the Retail Trade Nationalization Law, prohibiting companies with foreign stockholdings from engaging in retail sales. Since Liberty Flour Mills (LFM) fell under this category, its Filipino shareholders decided to organize a marketing firm to distribute LFM’s wheat-based products consisting of bakery flour, cake mixes, snacks and pollard. The name was changed to Liberty Commodities Corporation (LCC) on its second year in anticipation of diversification into other lines of business.A national sales network was organized to take charge of distribution to supermarkets, groceries and institutions such as bakeshops, bakeries, hotels, restraurants, fastfood outlets, canteens, hospitals, etc. Through the years, LCC has experienced rapid growth and expansion.
The Maya brand was launched with a line of premium mixes- hotcakes, brownies, cakes, cookies and the like which has become the benchmark of quality for this category. New lines and variants were continually added to the product mix. The Maya Oven Toaster Mix line was developed and launched in the mid-nineties. This original concept entrenched the company’s footing as a trailblazer in the industry. It featured a new dimension of ease and convenience to baking, expanding the market base in the process.
For the upscale market, gourmet cake mixes were introduced in September 2004. Called the “Decadence” line, it is backed by the strengths of Maya’s equity, associated with consistent quality and reliability.
Riding of the health-conscious trend, LCC came up with the Maya Whole Wheat Pancake Mix with muscovado sugar in 2010, a first in the local industry.
Effective July 1, 2015 LCC signed a co-branding agreement with the Walt Disney Company. A new product was developed- Pancake and Baking Mix- a unique formulation with reduced sugar and flexibility for a wide range of applications. Disney characters / movies are printed on its packaging as well as in selected other products. The line target families, encouraging baking activities a a means to bond together.
The Maya Kitchen Culinary Arts Center started as a department tasked with product development and consumer services. It has since evolved into a full-pledged cooking/baking school that offers basic and advanced training for professional as well as amateurs; as is accredited by Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).
Capping all these is the meticulous integration of quality into LCC’s management systems, earning the global ISO 9001:2008 certification.
